Different types of Psoriasis
Psoriasis is a complex, chronic autoimmune condition characterized by the rapid growth of skin cells, leading to thick, scaly patches on the skin. There are several types of psoriasis, each with its own unique set of symptoms and appearances. Understanding the different types can help in managing the condition more effectively.
1. Plaque Psoriasis (Psoriasis Vulgaris)
The most common form of psoriasis, plaque psoriasis, is characterized by raised, inflamed, red lesions covered with a silvery white buildup of dead skin cells, or scale. These plaques often appear on the scalp, knees, elbows, and lower back but can occur anywhere on the body.
2. Guttate Psoriasis
This type typically appears as small, dot-like lesions, often starting in childhood or young adulthood. Guttate psoriasis is often triggered by a strep throat infection and may be the first indication of psoriasis for some people.
3. Inverse Psoriasis
Found in the armpits, groin, under the breasts, and in other skin folds around the genitals and buttocks, inverse psoriasis causes smooth patches of red, inflamed skin that worsen with friction and sweating.
4. Pustular Psoriasis
Pustular psoriasis is characterized by white pustules (blisters of noninfectious pus) surrounded by red skin. It may be localized to certain areas of the body, such as the hands and feet, or cover a large area.
5. Erythrodermic Psoriasis
The least common type of psoriasis, erythrodermic psoriasis, can cover your entire body with a red, peeling rash that can itch or burn intensely. It's a severe form of psoriasis that can be life-threatening, especially if it leads to a significant loss of body fluids.
6. Nail Psoriasis
Psoriasis can affect both fingernails and toenails, leading to pitting, abnormal nail growth, and discoloration. Nails might become loose and separate from the nail bed or crumble in severe cases.
7. Psoriatic Arthritis
Not just limited to the skin, psoriatic arthritis affects the joints. This type of psoriasis leads to swollen, painful joints, similar to arthritis, and can affect any joint in the body. The skin symptoms generally precede the joint symptoms.
Each type of psoriasis has its own range of treatments, and what works for one person might not work for another. Dr. Barnett will identify the type of psoriasis and will create a personalized treatment plan just for you.
