Dr. Barnett has prescribed you a topical retinoid (i.e. tretinoin, Epiduo, Tazorac). This type of topical medication helps to open your pores, reduce acne lesions, improve skin texture, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, and increase collagen. It also promotes cellular differentiation and cell turnover.
HOW TO USE
After cleansing and moisturizing your face with the recommended products for your skin type, apply a finger-tip sized amount of your prescription retinoid to your entire face.
- Apply your retinoid every other night or even every third night, until you are eventually able to work up to using it every night without irritation
- Your topical retinoid should be used sparingly (only a finger-tip sized amount) to cover the entire face.
- Your topical retinoid should be applied at nighttime, unless otherwise instructed by your doctor.
- Moisturizing before applying your topical retinoid does not decrease the effectiveness, but does help to reduce irritation.
- You also may apply it sparingly to your chest and back for acne, if instructed to do so by your doctor.
- If you are using a retinoid for wrinkles, you may apply a very small amount to the crow's feet area around the eyes, but do not apply it to your eyelids.
Side effects can include peeling, irritation, and redness. It can take your skin up to two months to get used to the retinoid. Retinoids can make you sensitive to the sun, so it is important to use a daily sunscreen.
