One of the most common questions I hear from patients at Atlanta Skin Wellness Center goes something like this: "I wear sunscreen, but am I using the right one?" It's a fair question. And the honest answer almost always comes down to understanding what the label actually says.
Sunscreen labels are full of terms that sound simple but carry very specific clinical or regulatory meanings. A study published in JAMA Dermatology found that fewer than half of patients at a dermatology clinic could correctly define terms like "broad spectrum" and "SPF." Here in Atlanta, we have high UV exposure for the better part of ten months a year, intense summer humidity, and plenty of outdoor activity across neighborhoods from Sandy Springs to Buckhead to Piedmont Park. Picking the wrong sunscreen is not a small mistake.
Below I've broken down the most important label terms, what they mean, and what I actually tell my patients.
What Is Broad-Spectrum Sunscreen?
Broad spectrum means the sunscreen protects you from both types of harmful UV radiation: ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) rays. This is not a marketing phrase. It's an FDA-regulated designation, and a sunscreen has to pass specific testing before it can use those words on the label.
- UVB rays are the primary cause of sunburn, and the rays most commonly linked to skin cancer risk
- UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin and drive premature aging: fine lines, loss of elasticity, uneven tone, and deep pigmentation
- Both types contribute to skin cancer, including melanoma
- A sunscreen without broad spectrum protection may block burning rays while leaving you fully exposed to aging and cancer-causing UVA radiation
My recommendation: always look for "broad spectrum" on the label. If a sunscreen doesn't say it, don't assume it's giving you full protection.
What Is SPF and What Does the Number Mean?
SPF stands for sun protection factor. It's an FDA-defined term that measures how well a sunscreen protects against UVB rays specifically, the burning rays. The number on the label tells you how much of the sun's UVB radiation the product filters out.
What the numbers actually mean: SPF 15 filters roughly 93% of UVB rays. SPF 30 filters about 97%. SPF 50 filters approximately 98%. No sunscreen blocks 100% of UVB, which is why shade and sun-protective clothing still matter regardless of what SPF you're wearing.
The American Academy of Dermatology recommends SPF 30 or higher for daily use. For extended time outdoors in Atlanta's summer heat, whether that's a day on the lake, a morning run through Chastain Park, or a weekend at Stone Mountain, I typically advise patients to reach for SPF 50 and reapply diligently.
The protection difference between SPF 30 and SPF 100 is smaller than most people think. What matters far more than a high number is whether you're applying enough product, covering all exposed skin, and reapplying on schedule.
Water Resistance: What "Waterproof" Actually Means (Hint: Nothing)
There is no such thing as waterproof sunscreen. The FDA no longer allows manufacturers to use that word because it creates a false sense of security. Water and sweat will always wash some sunscreen from your skin over time.
What you'll see instead is "water resistant," and it comes in two FDA-defined versions:
Water Resistant
The sunscreen remains effective for up to 40 minutes of water exposure or heavy sweating before it needs to be reapplied.
Reapply after 40 min of water or sweatVery Water Resistant
Effective for up to 80 minutes in water or heavy sweating. Even so, reapplication is required once that window closes.
Reapply after 80 min of water or sweatNo Water Claim
Sunscreens without a water resistance designation should be reapplied every 2 hours regardless of whether you get wet or sweat.
Reapply every 2 hours minimumIn Atlanta's humid summers, I always recommend a water-resistant formula for any outdoor activity. Even a short walk. Between the heat and the humidity, most patients are sweating more than they realize.
When and How to Reapply Sunscreen
Reapplication is where most people fall short, even the ones who are consistent about applying sunscreen in the morning. UV exposure breaks down many sunscreen ingredients over time. Sweat and friction from towels and clothing remove product from the skin too.
- Every 2 hours during outdoor exposure, at minimum
- After toweling off, even if your time in the water was brief
- After heavy sweating, particularly important in Atlanta's summer heat
- After 40 minutes in water for water-resistant formulas
- After 80 minutes in water for very water-resistant formulas
- Even on cloudy days. Up to 80% of UV rays pass through cloud cover
I also want to address quantity. Most people apply far too little sunscreen. For the face alone, you should be using about a nickel-sized amount. For your full body, the guidance is approximately one ounce (a standard shot glass worth) per application. If you're using less than that, your effective SPF is lower than what the label states.
Chemical, Physical, and Hybrid Sunscreens: What Is the Difference?
The active ingredients in a sunscreen determine whether it's classified as chemical, physical (also called mineral), or hybrid. You'll always find active ingredients listed on the label. The FDA requires it.
Physical / Mineral
Contains titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, or both. Sits on top of the skin and works by absorbing and reflecting UV rays. Generally recommended for sensitive skin and most skin tones.
Best for sensitive skin, rosacea, post-procedureChemical
Contains ingredients like avobenzone, octinoxate, oxybenzone, or homosalate. Absorbs into the skin and converts UV rays to heat. Tends to go on invisibly and is popular for daily wear.
Lightweight, no white castHybrid
Combines one or more chemical and physical active ingredients. Offers versatility and can balance the cosmetic elegance of chemical formulas with the skin-friendly profile of mineral options.
Best of both approachesI rarely recommend one type universally. Patients with sensitive skin, rosacea, or anyone who has recently had a procedure (a chemical peel, laser treatment, or resurfacing) are usually better served by a mineral formula. Patients who've struggled with the white cast of older zinc oxide formulas may find that a hybrid or a newer cosmetically elegant mineral option works better for their daily routine.
What Is Tinted Sunscreen and Who Needs It?
Tinted sunscreen adds a layer of protection that regular broad-spectrum formulas can't provide: protection from visible light. Most sunscreens filter UV radiation but don't block visible light, which contributes to hyperpigmentation and melasma. These are two concerns that come up often among my patients in Atlanta with medium to deeper skin tones.
Why visible light matters: Research shows that visible light, particularly high-energy visible (HEV) light, can trigger and worsen melasma and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), especially in patients with Fitzpatrick skin types III through VI. Tinted sunscreens contain iron oxide, which filters visible light and provides meaningful additional protection for these patients.
There's a practical benefit too. Tinted sunscreens reduce or eliminate the white cast that can appear with mineral formulas, making them a better cosmetic fit for a wider range of skin tones. If you're dealing with dark spots, melasma, or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, ask me about a tinted SPF option at your next visit.
What Do "Sport," "Baby," and "Sensitive Skin" Labels Actually Mean?
These are terms the FDA has not officially defined for sunscreen. Their meaning is set by convention, not regulation. Here's how they're generally used:
Typically signals that the sunscreen is water or sweat resistant for 40 or 80 minutes, making it a better option for outdoor activity. Always confirm by checking whether the label says "water resistant" or "very water resistant" and the specific time designation.
Generally indicates the sunscreen uses only mineral active ingredients (titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, or both) which are less likely to irritate an infant's sensitive skin. The AAD recommends avoiding sunscreen on children younger than 6 months when possible and using mineral-only formulas for children 6 months and older.
Usually means the formula relies on mineral actives and avoids fragrance, oils, PABA, and chemical actives that can irritate reactive skin. If your skin tends to flush, sting, or react to products, this designation is a reasonable starting filter. That said, checking the ingredient list is always the most reliable approach.
Not defined by the FDA. The term appeared in response to studies suggesting some sunscreen ingredients may affect coral, but the scientific evidence remains limited and contested. The AAD supports further research. For patients asking about reef-safe options, mineral sunscreens (titanium dioxide and zinc oxide) are what most reef-safe claims point to.
Is Sunscreen Safe to Use Every Day?
Yes. The FDA's standards for sunscreen safety are high, and the current scientific consensus is that no sunscreen ingredients available in the U.S. are harmful to human health. There has been research showing that certain chemical sunscreen ingredients can be absorbed into the bloodstream. Absorption alone does not mean harm. The FDA and independent researchers have consistently concluded that patients should continue using sunscreen while longer-term studies continue.
What I tell my patients: the risks of UV exposure (skin cancer, melanoma, accelerated aging) are well documented and serious. The risk profile of using a well-formulated, FDA-regulated sunscreen every day is far lower.
